Shadow Mountain is not your average course, in fact there is nothing average about it. From the first time pencil went to paper, everyone knew that this was going to be one of the best courses in the country - you just had to look at the land.
Golf Course Architect Wayne Carleton said, "Shadow Mountain is one of the most intriguing properties for golf that I have had the pleasure to work on in Canada. The routing will take the golfer on an adventure across this diverse landscape of rolling forested sand dunes and mountainous terrain.
"No expense was spared in preserving the natural character of this wonderful site, letting the land dictate the design and thus allowing us to create some of the most memorable golf holes you will ever have the privilege of playing."
Shadow Mountain is not a return 9 golf course. You do not play 9 holes and return to the club house, then go play the next 9 holes.
At Shadow, you play 1 through 4 on the west side, travel through the tunnel, play 5 through 13 on the east, back through the tunnel and finish 14 through 19 on the west side.
You will be talking about this course weeks after you've played it.
Shadow Mountain's Golf Course follows the unwritten rule of working with the land. This course embraces it's two distinct terrains, and it is these contrasting topographies that makes for memorable, exciting and challenging play.
The course is divided in two, not only by the highway but by the terrain. The east side offers a desert with glorious mountain views.
This side utilizes a great deal of waste bunkers, which are created by stripping away existing vegetation and and leaving the existing sand there. This creates a very unique look throughout this side of the golf course.
The west side offers hilly terrain with dramatic elevation changes, sweeping mountain and river views. It is here that you will find big numbers in terms of yardage and par, but hopefully not scores!
What are the reviews so far? It's a show stopper.
In fact the comments have been almost unanimous - this is the best course in the area.
"9 out of ten golfers come back to the club house and indicate that it's the best course that they have ever played, whether it is international or local. It's really a positive response to where the course is at, because we allowed it that extra time to grow." said Shadow Mountain's Fred Mehl.
It is this maturity that takes everyone by surprise. People cannot believe that this is brand new course.
